Behind Closed Doors – the exhibition

Today was the day of Behind Closed Doors, the exhibition in London at which I had work on display. My set of four pictures, entitled Windows to the Soul, was on show alongside a wide range of other work from artists around the world.

Talking to the other exhibitors and visitors, I felt this is where I was meant to be. Using photography to raise awareness of animal welfare. I have combined my interests towards following my passion.

I went to the gallery last Thursday to measure up and hang the images. When hanging your own exhibition pictures, a retractable tape measure, pencils, and a spirit level are all essentials. A notebook is also useful for maths purposes when working out the spacing for the work!

In practical terms, the set up went very smoothly. I used Loxley Colour to print the photographs. I recommend the gallery block option for wall art. As well as the professional finish, the prints are light enough to hang with non-damage wall fixings. I tend to use Command products, such as the sawtooth hangers which will hold up to 2.2 kg. Easy to fix to the wall and offering an extremely firm hold, they look smart and were unaffected by the high temperatures we’ve had over the last few days.

It took a couple of hours to put the pictures up. The bulk of this time was taken measuring and allowing an hour for the wall fixings to set before hanging the gallery blocks.

There was an excellent turnout at the exhibition, and it was good to see such a wide selection of artists and visitors. The artists were – understandably – passionate about their work and their cause. Visitors ranged from those who already had similar passions, to those who wanted to learn more about animal welfare issues. I hope that the work on display will have given people food for thought, and also offered ideas as to how they can take steps as individuals towards living the most ethical lifestyle possible.

Following Behind Closed Doors, my photographs are going to Beijing for display at the ChinaFit conference at the end of June. Towards a Compassionate Nation are hosting the pictures in their exhibition space area, which will be focussing on raising awareness of vegan lifestyles and animal welfare.

It’s truly exciting to have work exhibited at these events. Even more exciting is the thought that the pictures are promoting something which I care about very deeply. From a career in the civil service to my new path as a photographer; what a journey this is!
