A Charity Cycle Ride

Last week I hosted three young men, and a bicycle in the studio. The three young men are members of the Wiltshire Army Cadet Force, and we’d arranged the photoshoot to create some images which they can use to help promote their forthcoming charity cycle ride.

I spoke to one of the organisers after the session.

Let’s start by learning a bit about you

My name’s Thomas and I’m 16. I like to do regular teenager activities, such as gaming and talking to friends. I also enjoy being in the Army Cadet Force. I’m currently taking A levels in IT and cyber security, and hope to have a career in the army.

Tell me more about the Army Cadet Force

I’m a sergeant in the Army Cadet Force. I joined when I was 12 and have made new friends, and done a range of courses through cadets. The courses include radio operation, advanced fieldcraft, and learning different musical instruments. I’ve completed most of the learning available to me as a cadet, which means I’m what’s known as a 4 star cadet.

What inspired you to arrange this cycle ride?

As cadets, we receive a lot of help from previous and current members of the armed forces. We wanted to create an event which would raise money to give something back, particularly to veterans in need of extra support.

Tell me about the charity you’re raising money for.

The charity is called Walking with the Wounded. The charity supports vulnerable armed forces veterans in rehabilitating into society. In particular, they offer support in finding employment and helping people to lead independent lives after service.

What sort of things will the money be used for?

Some will go towards therapy sessions, some into the rehoming programme, and some will go into Project Nova.

How many people are taking part in the ride?

There are three organisers, and we’ll have a maximum of twenty riders.

Do you have a support team, as well as riders?

Yes, we’re being supported by adult volunteers.

When is the cycle ride?

It takes place on 4th May 2019.

How far do you plan to cycle?

We’re aiming for 33.4 miles.

That’s a very specific distance. Do you have a route planned?

Yes. We’re planning a route to take us from the Army Reserve Centre in Swindon to Tilshead, the Cadet Training Centre on Salisbury Plain.

What support do you need?

As well as raising money, we’re hoping to find business support in the form of loans of bikes and cycle helmets, contributions of bottled water, and event t-shirts. Anything else which would help would be very much appreciated, for example, cycling glasses and gloves.

All support is received with thanks

How do I sponsor you?

You can sponsor us through our page on Virgin Money, or contact us through Wiltshire Army Cadets HQ in Devizes on 01380 724114.

Thank you

Thank you, Thomas, for introducing yourself, the Army Cadets, and Walking with the Wounded. You’ve shown wonderful initiative in conceiving and organising this event in support of such an important charity. I’m sure readers will join me in wishing you all every success, both in your fundraising, and in your futures.

Finally, if you can offer any support to the team, please do get in touch with them.
