Review

Networking was a prominent feature of my previous civil service career. It wasn’t something I particularly enjoyed, nor do I consider it one of my strengths. Which is why I was particularly interested to read Lizzie’s book. How would a book about networking resonate with me, someone who doesn’t much like working with a network?

The short answer is that the book resonated very well. Written during the current pandemic, the content is as up to date as one could possibly wish for. Lizzie’s guide ranges from social media networking, to author branding, to marketing plans, and much more too.  I was particularly struck by the accessible style of Lizzie’s writing. She covers basic principles of social media networking and promotions – such as the use of relevant hashtags, and building lists on Twitter – without patronising her audience. More in depth guidance accompanies topics such as social media networking hours and running promotions.

Much of the guidance is relevant to any small business owner seeking to raise their profile, and build (and, importantly, retain) new connections. Some of the writer specific chapters are particularly useful both to writers, and to anyone supporting a writer in their work. Guidance includes tips for scheduling time for writing, promotional event management, and preparing a media kit.

Lizzie offers gentle encouragement throughout the book, by drawing on personal knowledge and experience. I found this book a rich source of digestible, and very relevant, content. It is one which I will return to often as a reference guide.
