Unexpected Events

Life has a habit of settling into a routine, before throwing in something unexpected. I suppose it keeps us on our toes, but the safety of knowing what each day is likely to bring offers a degree of comfort. And for busy minds, having a routine is important. During these times, we are able to manage each day according to our expectations, while retaining a bank of energy for the unexpected.

We recently experienced one of life’s unexpected events, when Bode, one of our cats, fell seriously ill and needed emergency surgery. Almost overnight, he transitioned from a seemingly healthy seven-year-old cat in the prime of life, to a cat who needed urgent medical attention. He spent over a week in hospital, had life-saving surgery, and is now recovering at home. I have learnt much about the waste disposal system of male cats during this time.

Today’s post is about the kindness of others, and a thank you. The animal loving community is a strong one. As is the community of friends and family which we are fortunate to be a part of. The gratitude I feel extends from London to California, and many places in between. The London friend who reminded us that it was okay to reach out and ask for help. If people couldn’t help, they wouldn’t. But if we didn’t ask, nobody would ever know of the situation we faced. People across continents who contributed towards the medical bills. Messages from animal loving strangers who understand how much our animal companions are part of the family. Local friends who offered practical support, such as the loan of a recuperation container for our boy. And everybody who got in touch with best wishes for Bode. To everyone, thank you.

Life can be challenging, and we are fortunate in that we are able to deal with most things. We are usually able to offer help to others in need. But this occasion was something we were unprepared for, and I continue to feel the burden of responsibility for that. Ultimately, a short-term crisis has been eased no end by the kindness and generosity of others. And whenever I have any doubt about human nature, I will remember every person who supported us for the love of a cat. Please, if you need help, ask. People might not have much to offer in a material sense, but a kind word and emotional support both go a long way. We are all in this life together, whether human or other animal.
